Hugo Cassar – ‘Diamond’ Robusto Review

About 6 months ago I was at a local store which had a limited selection of cigars. I grabbed a few a sticks and didn’t look too closely until I got home to put them away. One of the new additions was the Hugo Cassar in a robusto size. Over time, and with my ever expanding collection, it made its way to the bottom of the humidor.

This morning I decided was a good time to have a large coffee and a cigar. I dug through my humi and the winning contestant was the Diamond by Hugo Cassar. Information on this cigar is scarce, but I believe it’s a Nicaraguan cigar made in the Dominican Republic. I took it out of the cellophane wrapper and smelled the foot of the cigar. I was not super excited as it smelled a bit dry… just like dry tobacco. On closer inspection I noticed the cap was a bit damaged and had what appeared to be a small crack in it. On a brighter note, the wrapper looked very nice and could have passed for a Cameroon wrapper if you were to go by look alone. It was a nice milk chocolate colour and had very few veins. The band was visually pleasing with the large reflective diamond on it.

On to the cut now: I choose my guillotine cutter ( a top of the line Palio ) and moistened the cap for a minute while I refilled my lighter. I lined it up and made the cut. With that, most of the cap came unwound and fell off. All but a little piece remained, which later got stuck to my lip. The pre light draw was effortless, very easy and I expected it would smoke quickly.

I blazed it up and puffed and puffed away for a little bit. It didn’t take long to smoke the first ½ inch off. Big clouds of smoke billowed from the cigar. At first I got distinct notes of pepper and spice, but as quickly as they came on, they went away. After that it basically tasted like harsh tobacco, with very little flavour. The stick burned evenly, but the ultra thin wrapper quickly developed several bulges and cracks in it.

Normally I would have thrown it away at this point but being dedicated to providing a thorough review, I soldiered on. Here the wrapper began to literally unwrap itself from the cap end. I moistened it and stuck it back down. Thankfully this cigar burned very quickly and in no time I was at the ½ way point. It was at this time, I had a moment of deja vu. I paid close attention to the aroma as I puffed away and I was transported back in time, to my youth. When I was about 12 years old, we used to burn the hay fields off in the spring. The dead grass was lit and acres and acres were burnt to make way for the fresh crop of hay to grow up. Anyone who has been around this will never forget the dry, hay smoke rising up to the sky. All I was getting from the Diamond was just that: Smoke reminiscent of dry hay burning.

Overall I got nothing pleasurable from this cigar whatsoever and would rate it close to the bottom of the list to date, although I have smoked worse. I would not recommend this cigar to anyone. I can only wish the horrible aftertaste had departed my mouth as fast as this 30 minute cigar departed this world.

    Thanks for the review dude! I’ll know what not to buy next time I’m looking for something I’ve never heard of. Looks like it may have been as bad as my ‘Te-Amo’ experience.

    You stored it in a humidor in it’s wrap? We smoke these off and on and always have a pleasurable experience with none of the issues you described. But we store properly and recognise that they are a nice 30 minute budget smoke. Just our POV.

    Interesting point you bring up Tony, and thanks for posting!
    I didn’t write the Cassar review, but I’m glad to hear a counterpoint. To unwrap, or not to unwrap is a personal choice that many people debate on. Depending on the cigar, origin, age, when I plan to smoke it, etc, I’ll leave some cigars wrapped, but generally don’t. I personally think proper storage has a lot more to do with temperature and RH versus a wrapper being left on. What’s a Hugo Cassar worth in your part of the world?
