Macanudo ‘Crystal’ Review

I have very little experience with Macanudo cigars, but recently received a surprise  Macanudo ‘Crystal’ from my wife.  The ‘Crystal’ comes in a glass tube and measures 5.5” by a 50 ring gauge.  I don’t know if it was the glass tube with the little tassel on it, the light, almost sandy wrapper, or just the fact that Macanudo is fairly new to me, but I was really looking forward to reviewing this cigar.

From what I’ve been able to learn, the Macanudo ‘Crystal’ sports a Connecticut shade grown wrapper, which is said to have been aged for two years.  The binder is Mexican tobacco, and the filler is believed to come from Jamaica and the Dominican Republic. Overall construction of this cigar was good, and the slightly rumpled wrapper was firm to the touch. There was a slight split at the foot of the Crystal, which didn’t affect anything later on.  Prior to being lit, the cigar had a nice mild tobacco smell at the foot.

I chose a guillotine cut and fired up the Crystal. The cigar lit easily, and had a nice medium draw to it. After a few minutes, I noticed that the cigar had a nice, mild flavour to it. I’d describe the initial taste as being ‘dry’ and earthy. I chose to pair this cigar with a Guinness, which turned out to be an excellent decision. The dark, almost bitter Guinness character balanced perfectly with the mild cigar.

Moving in to the second third, the Crystal continued to burn well.  I was impressed that the cigar barely burned if left alone, but a single draw would pull out clouds of smoke. The taste stayed consistent into the second third of the cigar, but got just a little stronger.  There were definitely some dry, woody hints to the taste going into the final third. The strength of the cigar stayed fairly mild as well.

As the Macanudo smouldered in to the final third, I noted that the burn was still almost dead even, and the draw remained easy.  The flavours stayed consistent, and then all of a sudden…. out came a flavour that I had a tough time with.  I was surprised to pick up something that was almost black-currant ish, or maybe like a mild port flavour. Regardless of what the taste was, it changed up a little bit, keeping me interested right ‘till the end.

Overall, I really enjoyed the Macanudo Crystal. It’s a definite change from what I usually go for, both in flavour and strength. The cigar burned well, drew well, poured off smoke on command, and was generally a pleasant mild to (almost) medium bodied cigar from start to finish. Would I buy another ? Yes, absolutely. Would I recommend the Macanudo Crystal ?  Yes.  I think the Crystal is a perfect ‘not too serious or complex’ cigar, well paired with morning coffee on a weekend or after dinner any night of the week. The Crystal is simple enough that I think enthusiasts of any level could find something they enjoy about it.  This cigar was a perfect reminder to me that sometimes, simple is more than enough.

Cheers,

-Matt
